Christian Leimberger was born in Leogang in Saalfelden about 1709. He had a brother named Andreas who remained in that area.
Christian Leimberger, a Salzburger, was expelled from the Catholic province of Salzburg [now Austria] in 1733 for professing to be Lutheran. He and approximately 40,000 others were forced to leave. The King of England paid the expenses of sending him and 40 others to Georgia to settle. They arrived on March 12, 1734 and settled about 25 miles north of the year-old town of Savannah, Georgia in a settlement that they named Ebenezer. Christian Leimberger has many descendants living all over the United States. The name has been anglicized to Limeberger and Lineberger. There are related persons today which use the two names.
