Descendants of Lewis LINEBARGER

Generation No. 1

1. LEWIS5 LINEBARGER (JOHN4, JOHANNES3, JOHANNES2 LYENBERGER, HERMAN1 VON LYENBERGER) was born October 08, 1800 in Lincoln Co. No. Carolina, and died May 29, 1883 in Tangent, Linn Co. Oregon1. He married JANE HENDERSON February 02, 1822 in Jackson Co. Indiana, daughter of JOSEPH HENDERSON and JANE MC GEE.

Notes for LEWIS LINEBARGER:
The ancestor, Herman Von Lyenberger, being the father of Johannes is tentative.
Settled in Florence twp. Will Co. Ill. In. around 1830. " Some dispute as to who was the first settler of this township has arisen in consequence of the nearness of some of the first settlements to the northwest corner, across the line from which other early settlements were made in adjoining townships. We have doubt, from close investigation, that Lewis LINEBARGER is justly entitled to that honor. Several other of the Linebarger family came to Jackson Township in the year 1832, and, as we have seen in the history of that township, returned to Indiana on the appearance of the Indian troubles. The next spring , Lewis moved out and settled at what has since been known as Starr's Grove, though the neighborhood was then really considered a part of Reed's Grove. Perhaps, from this circumstance Linebarger has been incorrectly accredited to Jackson Township. Linebarger built a log cabin, which was the first and made other improvements. He did not enter the land, but subsequently sold his claim to Arthur POTTS, and removed to Oregon."(quoted from a history of Will Co.) He, and family are found in a census of Montgomery Co.Missouri in 1840.
In 1843, Lewis, and his wife, Jane, and their children crossed the country on the Emegrant Trail to Oregon, in 1843. They settled first, in Washington Co. Cert. #2806- 640 ac. 640, 125 3w 21, Tuality Co. At the bute on road leading to Tuality Plains. In 1850, they took their Donation Land Claim near Tangent, Linn Co.Oregon. No. 4238, 557.57 ac. /sec.20 Twp. 12, So. of range 3, W. of the Willamet meridian. Lewis was a teamster, and raised horses, some rare breeds. Oregon City DLC Cert. #4238, Linn Co. Family mysteries; What became of Joseph. Was there a Clementine? Later information gives a Harriet, who married David Murphy Sept. 5, 1838.
Another one: from the History of Will co. Ill. "Another of the Linebargers also settled here in 1834. He, too, moved to Oregon." Who was that? And what year did he go?

Original land claim- Provisional Govt. Tuality dist. #4238, 557.57 ac. 125 3w 20, At the bute on road leading to Tuality plains. Intends personal occupancy, 18 Dec. 1846. ( At statehood, these original claims were ignored,) but the U.S. Gov. set up the Donation Lands act, giving them the land in Linn Co. 1854- Donation Land claim, Linn Co. Tangent area. (Now located astride I-5). With Lewis's adjoining, to the west.

On Nov. 1, 1860, John was granted a patent in California, in the Mt. Diablo Meridian, Twp. 0170S, Range 0210E, Sect. 026, Document ID # 415. He bought land in Ventura Co. from Lewis Cooper (his brother-in law). Where he ran teams of horses, on a freight wagon supplying mining claims in the Sierra Foothills.

In the 1880s, John and his son, Edwin leased the Buena Vista cattle ranch. One bit of family lore mentions an attempt to heard cattle with Ostriches! That didn't work, and the Mexican workers wouldn't eat Ostrich meat either. Blight finally ruined the crops, and the family headed for Wyoming.

John was killed by a drunken Indian, with an axe, in Smokey Valley, Nev.

Notes for BARBARA MARIA BROWN:
Barbara Maria Brown was called Mariah.

She married first, Hiram Davis, and had two children, Jefferson and Mary. Jefferson died while the family was crossing the plains to Calif. the Brown family and the Davis family decided to take the trek to Calif. Hiram finally procured transportation for himself and family, including two of Maria's brothers. when the wagons were all packed and ready to depart, Hiram found that he could not collect some money owed to him. So he stayed behind, expecting to catch up with the wagon train later on horseback. He started, but was robbed and murdered on the way. Maria did not know for a long time that she was a widow.

She and her daughter, Mary were in San Francisco at the time that Maria and John were married. They were with Maria's Brothers, Edward Lewis, a merchant, and James Franklin, a milliner. Maria worked at the milliner shop. Maria and John, and Mary sailed on a Honeymoon trip to Hawaii. On the return to California, they were shiprecked in a storm, and rescued. But her family all thought she had been lost at sea, and mourned her death. Her brother, Edward only found out many years later, from a relative, that Maria was still alive, at they had a re-union in 1902.

Mary shows up on the 1850 Census in Washington County, Oregon, But from that time, her fate is unknown.

Marriage Notes for JOHN LINEBARGER and BARBARA BROWN: Barbara Maria was first married to Hiram Davis, in Indiana. They had two children, Mary, and Jefferson. Hiram Davis died in Indiana while his family was on the wagon train to California. Jefferson died on the way.

Notes for LEWIS EDWIN LINEBARGER:
When Ed was a small child, the family moved from Oregon to Alameda, Ca. then to property near Visalia. Family found in 1870 Census, Tulare Co. Ca. Edwin, age 17. Had dark hair, and brown eyes.

Then Ed drove herds of horses to Wyoming, where he decided to stay, and where he met, and married Minerva. They left there, and returned to California, because ED, a Cattleman, was involved in the fights between the cattlemen, and the sheepmen. And his life was threatened.

By 1882, he and his father were leasing the Buena Vista Ranch, at what is now Vista, Ca. From there, they returned to Wyoming.

Then back, to be foreman on the Ojos Negros Ranch, in Lower (Baja) California, in the mountains East of Ensinada. Then a ranch that is now in the city of San Diego.

Around 1910, the family moved to the Mojave Desert, because of Dodie's lung problems (she probably had Valley Fever). They owned the Llano Verde Ranch, and at another time, had another ranch in the west end of the valley, The Santa Rosa Rancho. The family lived in Lancaster, in a house with thick, rock walls, and a wide porch all the way around, for coolness . For a time, they, the Talbots, (Nettie's family), and the Bugbees (Edith and Ross), all lived in a row, in town, with a neighbor's house between each.

Still a mystery is their connection to the Harwood Ranch, in Kern Co.

4. ANDREW JACKSON6 LINEBARGER (LEWIS5, JOHN4, JOHANNES3, JOHANNES2 LYENBERGER, HERMAN1 VON LYENBERGER) was born 1829 in Covington, Park Co. Indiana, and died Bef. June 10, 1861 in Benton Co. Oregon. He married (1) LUCY ELEANOR GILMOUR Bef. 1853 in Lynn Co. Or.. He married (2) ELIZABETH MC BEE December 31, 1857 in Benton Co. Oregon, daughter of JAMES MC BEE.

Notes for ANDREW JACKSON LINEBARGER:
He fought in the Cayuse Indian War, Nov. 1848. Co.A. 2nd Private, Capt. John Setters Co. D. Also fighting, brothers John H. and Lewis.

The cause of his death, in 1861 is unknown.

His wife,Elizabeth Mc Bee, and two daughters, were found in the 1870 and 1880 census of Benton Co. living with her father, or brother, J.W. Mc Bee, and family.
He was probably m. 1st. to Lucy Eleanor Gilmour, sister of John T. Gilmour, who married Virginia Linebarger. The theory is that Lulcy died when their daughter, Elizabeth was very young, or possibly in childbirth; and that Elizabeth was raised by the Gilmore family. Convincing evidence appears from two sources:

The 1860 census for Linn Co. , Or. shows an Elizabeth Linebarger, aged 7 in the household of John W. Gilmore. The remaining children have names that coincide closely with those listed as the children of John Wilson Gilmour of Silverton, Marion Co. Or. in ; A PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD (of the Willamette Valley, pub. 1903).

Updated material:
Elizabeth, Lizzie Mc Bee was the daughter of James McBEE, a pioneer of the Willamette Community. James McBEE came from Missouri in 1850. His children were John, William, George, Thomas, Joseph, David, James, Nancy, and Lizzie (Linebarger). James, the seventh son, was called "Doc"." William, and Joseph, then were her brothers. J.W. would have been either Joseph, John, or James.

The theory is Andrew Linebarger, and Lucy Eleanor Gilmore had a daughter, Elizabeth, and that the mother died when Elizabeth was very young. Or possibly in childbirth. Convincing evidence appears from two sources: The 1860 census for Linn Co. , Or. shows an Elizabeth Linebarger, aged 7 in the household of John W. Gilmore.
